"Centers. NSF supports a variety of individual centers and centers programs, which contribute to NSF’s investment in Ideas. The centers play a key role in furthering the advancement of science and engineering in the U.S., particularly through their encouragement of interdisciplinary research and the integration of research and education. While the programs are diverse, the centers generally share common commitments to coordination and team-based cross-disciplinary research."

June 14, 2002 article from The Chronicle of Higher Education on interdisciplinary science offers data on research center funding at NSF and NIH
http://chronicle.com/weekly/v48/i40/40a02001.htm
Using growth in research center funding as a rough proxy for growth in federal support of interdisciplinary science, the article provides the following data:
NSF research center funding: $204 million (1998) to $359 million (2002) -- 76% increase (compared to 39% rise in NSF's overall budget over the period)
NIH research center funding: $1,176 million (1998) to $2,127 million (2002) -- 80% increase (compared to 71% rise in NIH's overall budget over the period)

"A joint program of the NSF and several U.S. states and territories, EPSCoR promotes the development of science and technology resources through partnerships involving universities, industry, government, and the federal research and development enterprise. It operates on the principle that aiding researchers and institutions in securing federal R&D funding will develop a state's research infrastructure and advance economic growth, and its main goal is to maximize the potential inherent in a state's science and technology resources and use those resources as a foundation for economic growth."
