 Biography

Royce Engstrom is the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota. He has held a variety of positions at the University of South Dakota including Professor of Chemistry, Chair of the Chemistry Department (1984-1995), Director of Research (1996-1999), and Vice President for Research and Dean of Graduate Education.

Dr. Engstrom has been heavily involved with the National Science Foundation Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR) Program, both on the state and national levels. Another national organization in which he has been very active is the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), of which he has served as President, Secretary, and Chemistry Councilor for many years. Beginning in 1997, Dr. Engstrom was involved in the formation of the South Dakota Health Research Foundation, a partnership between the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and Sioux Valley Hospitals and Health System; he is currently Research Director for the Foundation.

Dr. Engstrom holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Honors he has received include the Burlington Northern Award in Teaching Excellence and the Ernest Buckley Award for Overall Excellence in Research. Outside of work, Dr. Engstrom spends as much time as he can either paddling or building wooden canoes.
