This CDI RRPA workshop will consider strengths, strategies and potential partnerships in the EPSCoR community for networking for advanced cyberinfrastructure to support research and education. A major goal of this workshop is to explore potential strategies and collaborations that will lead to research infrastructure partnerships that might be competitive for NSF funding for large-scale, center-level endeavors.

Workshop Background:
The National Science Foundation, Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) has recently announced an intention to develop an Initiative called,

“Global Environment for Networking Investigations or GENI to explore new networking capabilities that will advance science and stimulate innovation and economic growth…“The GENI Initiative responds to an urgent and important challenge of the 21st Century to advance significantly the capabilities provided by networking and distributed system architectures. GENI comprises two components: the GENI Research Program and the experimental GENI Facility. It is intended to catalyze a broad community effort that will engage other agencies, other countries, and corporate entities.”

In addition to GENI and Office of Cyberinfrastructure initiatives, it is important to recognize an emerging new strategy, and associated funding, recently announced in the NSF EPSCoR Office to support Strength Based Research Coalitions as part of the on-going NSF EPSCoR RII Program.

Purpose:
The CDI project believes that the timing is excellent to make an effort aimed at bringing together infrastructure and research leaders in the EPSCoR community to promote their competitiveness in these and other NSF emerging programs. This meeting is an opportunity to:
-- Learn about and discuss emerging programs with NSF program directors,
-- Explore issues of acquisition, architecture, research, and human interaction leading to the deployment of state of the art and leading edge networking and cyberinfrastructure technologies, and
-- Interact with potential collaborators and leading performers in the national and EPSCoR domain in order to promote successful EPSCoR community strategies to take advantage of upcoming solicitations in the area of advanced networking and cyberinfrastructure.
