Institutions that plan to submit MRSEC proposals in 2004 should plan to attend this workshop. The workshop will also be of interest to teams that seek collaborators for a future MRSEC proposal and for institutions seeking to engage in long-term strengthening of their materials science programs.
Few EPSCoR institutions have the depth to compete successfully for a MRSEC by themselves. Most will have to partner with other institutions. One focus of the workshop will be on successful partnering. Additionally, it is anticipated that partnerships will develop among some of the workshop attendees.
An excellent approach to developing strong institutional programs in materials science is to consider what it would take to be competitive for a MRSEC. This workshop will consider what elements must be in place to make an institution competitive for a MRSEC.

The EPSCoR Centers Development Initiative (CDI) is funded by NSF to provide consulting and technical assistance to research teams in the EPSCoR states competing for NSF centers and other large-scale projects. CDI also maintains a portfolio of proactive workshops as a way to affect a larger subset of the EPSCoR community and to uncover specific projects for its technical assistance portfolio.
