EPSCoR EOS 2004
February 9-10, 2004 | Hilton Old Town Alexandria, Alexandria, VA
Introduction
The EPSCoR Centers Development Initiative (CDI) is hosting a workshop on February 9-10, 2004 to explore the interface between:
- NSF's emerging initiatives and programs related to "Environmental Observing Systems"
- EPSCoR research activities, plans, and strategies in these areas
The emerging NSF initiatives being targeted are:
- National Ecological Observatories Network (NEON)
- Collaborative Large-scale Engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research (CLEANER)
- Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI)
- Long Term Hydrologic Observatories (LTHO)
There are several ongoing organizing activities associated with these four EOS initiatives:
- NEON: IBRCS/AIBS
- CLEANER: Berkeley
- OOI: DEOS/CORE
- LTHO: CUAHSI
Goals
- Leverage the activities of ongoing organizing activities and bolster the EPSCoR community's knowledge about, participation in, and future competition for these emerging NSF large-scale initiatives
- Educate the EPSCoR research community about upcoming NSF initiatives and plans in environmental observing systems and networks (to allow an early jump once programs are announced)
- Explore local and regional EPSCoR environmental observing systems and research activities/strengths in these areas
- Discuss strategies for successfull EPSCoR competition for and participation in future NSF Environmental Observing Systems
Background
CDI is an NSF-funded initiative aimed at increasing the participation of EPSCoR researchers in NSF’s centers and other large-scale programs. CDI provides technical assistance to EPSCoR university research teams competing for large-scale NSF projects. In addition, CDI organizes centers development workshops, hosts an informative website, and conducts proactive outreach activities. CDI also provides outreach and technical assistance associated with emerging large-scale initiatives and programs at NSF (such as those being collectively referred to as "environmental observing systems [EOS]").
